Prehospital Trauma Life Support

The Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) course from Medicine In Bad Places is designed for EMS providers, first responders, healthcare professionals, and emergency medical personnel who want to strengthen their ability to assess, manage, and treat trauma patients in the prehospital environment.

PHTLS focuses on the critical thinking, patient assessment, trauma care principles, and hands-on skills needed to improve patient outcomes during serious injury emergencies. The course helps responders make better decisions when managing traumatic injuries before the patient reaches the hospital.

NAEMT PHTLS Trauma Training

The NAEMT Prehospital Trauma Life Support course promotes excellence in trauma patient management for prehospital care practitioners. The course gives participants a structured approach to trauma care, helping them recognize life-threatening injuries, prioritize treatment, and provide effective care in the field.

Trauma Assessment and Care Prioritization

Participants learn how to perform rapid and thorough trauma assessments, identify critical injuries, and establish treatment priorities. This includes evaluating the mechanism of injury, recognizing immediate life threats, and making timely decisions in high-pressure situations.

Airway, Breathing, Circulation and Shock Management

PHTLS training covers essential trauma care topics including airway management, breathing concerns, circulation problems, hemorrhage control, and shock recognition. Students learn how to support patient stabilization and address life-threatening conditions before hospital arrival.

Hands-On Trauma Care Skills

Hands-on practice is a key part of PHTLS training. Participants may practice trauma assessment, immobilization, wound management, spinal stabilization, patient movement, and other emergency care skills in a simulated training environment.

Teamwork and Prehospital Trauma Response

Effective trauma care requires strong communication and teamwork between EMS providers, first responders, healthcare professionals, and receiving facilities. PHTLS reinforces the importance of coordinated care from the incident scene to the hospital.

PHTLS Training for EMS and First Responders

PHTLS prepares responders to adapt trauma care skills to many real-world emergencies, including motor vehicle crashes, falls, workplace injuries, gunshot wounds, explosions, and other traumatic incidents. The goal is to improve confidence, decision-making, and the quality of prehospital trauma care.
